THE BEST PORT WINE TOUR IN PORTO? MY EXPERIENCE VISITING FERREIRA.

Being my first time in Porto, I wasn’t sure which wine cellar to visit first because there are so many historic lodges. After talking with my city tour guide, he steered me toward Caves Ferreira and I’m so glad he did.

What makes Ferreira so special is that it’s one of the few iconic Port houses founded and built entirely by a Portuguese family.

Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira

But the real highlight of the tour was learning about Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira Widowed young at just 33 years old, she took charge of the family business during a time when women rarely held power in the industry.

Known affectionately as Ferreirinha (Little Ferreira), she became one of the most remarkable wine entrepreneurs in history. She didn’t just expand the business, she invested heavily in building local infrastructure, supporting winemaking communities along the Douro Valley, and fighting against agricultural crises like the phylloxera pest that devastated European vineyards.

Walking through the dark, fragrant cellar halls surrounded by giant wooden vats felt like stepping back in time. The air smells of oak and aging wine, and centuries of Portuguese heritage are embedded in every brick.

After the walk through history, sitting down for the tasting made the experience so much richer. It wasn’t just a Port Wine Tasting experience; it was a deep dive into the heart and soul of Porto.

If you’re visiting Porto for the first time and want an authentic blend of history and world-class wine, Caves Ferreira should be at the top of your list!
