THE POWER OF THE 5-MINUTE PAUSE.

We often tell ourselves a lie: “I’Il reach out when work slows down,” or, “We’ll catch up this weekend when things are quiet.” Or even: “Once this project is over, I’ll have the headspace to really be present.”

The reality? That “calm period” almost never shows up when we expect it to. The busy work just rolls right into the next thing, and in waiting for the perfect timing, we keep pushing off the people who actually matter to us and miss out on the everyday little moments that keep relationships alive.

Lately, I’ve been thinking: what if we stopped waiting for the noise to clear?

When we talk about “disconnecting,” we usually picture a long weekend away, a vacation, or shutting off screens after dinner. But honestly, some of the best resets take less than five minutes, and at times, it’s only a phone call away.

Instead of forcing yourself to stare at the screen or endlessly scrolling through social media to numb out for a minute… what if you just closed your laptop?

The power of the 5-Minute pause

What if, right there in the middle of a messy Tuesday, you decided to reach out to someone you love….your partner, sister, parent, or best friend?

Share a quick laugh: Text an inside joke or a funny memory that instantly shifts the mood.

A real check-in: Call for just three minutes simply to ask, “How is your day actually going?” and truly listen.

Reminisce together: Mention a fond memory that brings a smile to both your faces, or talk about something exciting you’re looking forward to doing together.

Squeeze in future plans: Pencil in a date night or quick coffee with your partner right onto your messy to-do list…giving you both something bright to look forward to at the end of a hectic day or week.

Doing this works both ways. For the person you reach out to, it’s a sudden reminder that they are loved and valued, even when life gets chaotic. For you, it’s an anchor, a brief pause to catch your breath and step away from the noise, giving your mind a moment of connection to reset.

Who is one person you can send a quick, random text to right now in the middle of your day?

  • This is excellent advice. I do like to do this with my family, definitely. I find it useful sometimes to check in with myself too, make myself laugh by remembering a funny moment in a story, or a film, or just by picturing a koala, or a dog, or a squirrel. xxxxxx
